Self-care after eye surgery
Self-care after eye surgery
The first 1-3 days
- Alternating pressing the eyes with cold compresses will help reduce swelling, bruising, and inflammation. Do it as often as possible for about 3-5 minutes at a time.
The first 1-2 weeks
- Apply warm compress after the 4th day onwards to stimulate blood circulation. Doing it continuously will help reduce swelling and bruising quickly.
- Sleeping with your head elevated in the first week will help blood circulation and help the wound heal faster.
- Avoid getting water in the eye area or the surgical site and keep the wound clean to prevent infection.
- Avoid smoking as it can slow down the healing process.
- Avoid wearing contact lenses to reduce the risk of touching the wound or causing irritation.
- Clean the wound 1-2 times a day using a cotton swab soaked in sterile saline solution to wipe away any blood stains until 3 days after the stitches are removed.
- Take medication strictly as prescribed by the doctor.
1 month and more
- Avoid pickled foods and alcohol for the first month.
- Apply a thin layer of ointment to disinfect the wound area until it dries. *It is not necessary to apply it in every case.*
Self-care after stitches removal
After 3 days
- Faces can be clean after 3 days after stitches removal with the surgical area being clean with extra care to prevent clogged pores
After 3 days to 1 week
- You can wear makeup as usual 3-7 days after stitches are removed. It is recommended to wear light makeup or avoid it if possible.
- You can exercise 3-7 days after stitches are removed.
- You can wear contact lenses 1 week after stitches are removed.
After 1 months
- Avoid rubbing your eyes as this can cause problems with your eyelids, especially after having an open eyelid surgery.
- Sleep on your side if you have uneven eye swelling. It is normal for one eye to be unevenly swollen. You can sleep on your side with the more swollen side on top.
- Follow up on the postoperative wound as scheduled by the doctor. Some cases may have a raised wound. This is normal and the wound will gradually improve. Come to the doctor for every scheduled appointment to continuously check on your symptoms.
After 3-6 months
- Start applying scar treatment cream 3 days after stitches are removed, apply thinly 2-3 times/day continuously for 6 months.
- The scar will improve and fade after 3-6 months or more. The scar will improve and the eyelid will gradually settle after about 4 months or more, depending on the individual.
